Cataclysm: A Matt Sheridan Novel - Book One is a sensational thriller by Robert Cole set in modern-day America. First, there was a flash, then came a boom that would change the world forever. Matt Sheridan awoke not to the crack of thunder but the deep rumble of the nukes as they flattened entire cities. Matt takes his family to his brother’s remote farm in Vermont where he hopes to ride out the building calamity. As a former Ranger, he has the skills and knowledge to protect his family, but tensions continue to mount in the remaining states. Dark times lie ahead for the Sheridan family after Matt hears talk of a second terrorist attack against a nation already in a state of collapse. Rumors of a weapon that may very well wipe out the entire human race force Matt to do whatever it takes to ensure his family’s survival.
Cataclysm had me engaged from the first few pages. Robert Cole did a fantastic job of showing the deteriorating state of the world in his opening chapters. There's a real sense of danger and uncertainty as events unfold, and the characters’ reactions to the crumbling world around them made the experience all the more enjoyable and gripping. The plot was paced just right and allowed me to get to know the great and well-written cast of characters better. I also liked how Robert kept ramping up the threat level and the tension in interesting ways as the story progressed. I simply loved reading Cataclysm and recommend it to readers looking for a good thriller with some dystopian themes mixed in.
