Castle of Blue Stones by Jordan Elizabeth is a YA paranormal dystopian tale. Jaisy woke up to a world turned blue with no memories from her past life. According to the Guardians, the world was decimated by a volcano and the residents of the Blue Castle are the remaining survivors. Only the Guardians remember the past. Plagued by visions and dreams of another life, Jaisy begins to unravel the web of deception that has captured them for almost an entire year. The Guardians are cruel and control every area of their existence, even telling them who and when to marry. But Jaisy and her friends discover their deception goes even deeper than they initially thought. In discovering the truth, Jaisy also finds her strength as she fights for love and a life away from the Castle of Blue Stones.
The land of Ghoram is a land of shapeshifters and normal humans. Castle of Blue Stones' plot is based on the discrepancies that arise when a more powerful race oppresses a ‘lesser’ race. The consequences of cruelty because you have power over someone can be dire. I enjoyed this book because of the mystery elements as Jaisy discovered who she really is and the truth about the Guardians. Jordan Elizabeth really knows how to create an atmosphere of dread. I also like villains you can sympathize with even if they threaten to end the world as we know it (think MCU villains). There is some violence that is graphic for those who are sensitive to such. There are also a few ghosts hanging about the old castle to add to the doom and damnation atmosphere. The ending was expected but not obvious at all. That was a great twist to the sub-plot. It was a pleasure to read.
