In Cash Valley, author Ryan Nelson introduces us to FBI Agent Alex Travis, a young family man and green agent living in 1954 Utah. Handed a cold case concerning the robbery of the Cache County Bank, Agent Travis is excited about the chance to prove himself. It could advance his career if he solves the case, but his failure could sink his career. It will be an extremely difficult task as two seasoned agents before him have failed to solve the case. Then one morning an odd phone call from an old stranger offers hope that new information about the robbery may exist. Agent Travis only has to travel to an isolated canyon in Northern Utah to meet someone, but who will that someone be waiting there for him?
Cash Valley is Ryan Nelson’s noteworthy debut novel. Its story details a crime to be solved, a mystery to be resolved. The author’s knowledge of the area where the action of the story takes place is obvious and helps paint a clear picture for us readers. He carefully inserts anecdotal history about the places visited by the story’s characters, who are everyday people with histories and backstories, and that is what makes them so real to us. Alex Travis has a wife and is soon to be a father. Jack Pepper is a likable young man who has turned out fine despite a tough childhood. These character talk like real people, thanks to the author, and the result is a very readable action mystery.
