Carlos Finds Courage by Hector Contreras is an educational picture book for young children. The book is based on a young boy named Carlos who is starting at a new school. Carlos is nervous because he is worried that he won't make any friends, but on his first day, and with lollipops in hand, Carlos gains two new friends; Bridget and DeShawn! Everything is going well until a boy named Leon starts to bully Carlos. He pushes Carlos into the mud and steals his homework. Luckily for Carlos, he still has Bridget and DeShawn to comfort and support him, and they even encourage Carlos to tell Mrs. Wilson. Will telling Mrs. Wilson stop Leon from bullying Carlos? Find out in Carlos Finds Courage!
Carlos Finds Courage was a pleasure to read. Author Hector Contreras has done a great job of creating a story based on how to overcome bullying. It shows that bullies never win if you stand up for yourself and tell an adult. This is important because a lot of children struggle with being bullied, and they often feel afraid to tell a teacher or their parents, like in this story. We need more books like Carlos Finds Courage so that children feel guided and mimic what the characters do in the book. I loved every page and the illustrations by Hayam El-Abbas are adorable and fun. I honestly can't recommend this book enough and I hope many children will read and benefit from it, as I did. Please continue to educate children with your beautiful stories, Hector Contreras. I wish you all the best for the future.
