Do you suffer from a debilitating disease? One that isolates you from the world because you dare not go out of the house for fear of having an ‘accident,’ one that requires an immediate visit to the bathroom? In Susan Montgomery’s Capturing Colitis, the author shares her experiences of living with ulcerated colitis. It’s not fun, but the author has an incredible wit and sense of humor which she shares in her poetry and artwork, her creative side helping to keep her sane as she fights this horrible disease. I know; I’m living the same nightmare. I found this author/artist’s creativity very refreshing, something I can turn to when my days are bad.

Susan Montgomery’s chapbook, Capturing Colitis: Poems and Illustrations on My Life with Ulcerative Colitis, is a different perspective addressing the plight of one woman’s battle against a painful disease. There are treatments, as the author points out, but nothing that really works. Then there are her fantasy treatments, the ones she dreams about, which could potentially work (perhaps in an alternate universe). It has been said and written many times that laughter is the best medicine, and this author proves that in her work. The author uses a simple form of rhyming verse to share her views and almost childlike illustrations that reflect the simplicity of how we perceive the trials we face. In addition to the poems and illustrations, the author has written a summary of her disease and experiences as she lives with it and tries to fight it. I found this collection soothing and it would be the same for any other patient fighting this terrible disease.
