Captive in the Dark follows the emotional and physical journey of Livvie, a young girl who gets kidnapped. As well as telling her story, CJ Roberts also tells the story from the perspective of Livvie’s captor, the unbearable and handsome Caleb, who is both her tormentor and her comforter. Whilst Caleb attempts to train her as a pleasure slave, using her as a pawn to get his own revenge, and Livvie struggles to accept the hand she’s been dealt, they both find themselves developing feelings for one another. However, despite her confusing feelings towards him, when the chance to escape presents itself, Livvie takes it and finds that she has jumped from the frying pan into the fire, leaving her kidnapper to rescue her.
This book was seriously dark – I loved it! It was twisted and unconventional, which I found really refreshing. It feels almost morally wrong to admit that I liked it because of the subject matter! The characters were really well developed; Livvie’s reactions were totally understandable, even her romantic feelings towards Caleb. As for Caleb, despite being incredibly cruel to her at times, CJ Roberts somehow made him seem redeemable, in part because of his past and also because he had a reason for kidnapping her – not that it makes it right, of course, but at least he has a reason instead of just kidnapping her out of greed or cruelty. Captive in the Dark ends on a cliff-hanger, which made me desperate to read the second book, and the first chapter of Seduced in the Dark (Book 2) at the end only enhanced my curiosity.
