Captive Hearts centers on Captain Frederick Wentworth and the love of his life, Anne Elliott. Many other impressive characters add to the beauty of the story. Frederick and Anne were in love and engaged when Anne changed her mind and backed out on the advice of a dear friend. Frederick is heartbroken and turns to his career, staying at sea for many months at a time. Anne also feels the loss and refuses offers from other men, rarely attending the many dinners and parties the rest of her family is so fond of. It is eight long years later and Frederick finally returns but it takes many weeks before he approaches Anne. They renew their friendship and are faced with opposition and even kidnapping. Will the two finally find happiness or are they doomed to remain separated and miserable?
Captive Hearts: A Persuasion Variation by Kelly Miller combines the romance of the Regency era with the feel of the present. This is the most perfect romantic, old-fashioned historical novel I have read for a very long time. While having a few faults, Captain Wentworth is the kind of man any woman could fall in love with. Anne is the needy damsel in distress just waiting for Mr. Right. The detail of the town, the homes, and the events of the day made the tale and the characters come alive, pulling me right into the story. Kelly Miller has written a wonderful new book using the backbone of a Jane Austen novel and this is a five-star winner.
