In Canyon Bound by Jon Messenger, people across the world begin disappearing one by one. They call it the Rapture. Even though it isn’t the best description of what’s happening to the world, it’s a name that seems appropriate at first to the religious mind ... until they realize that everyone is disappearing, not just the faithful ones. Tommy is the only one who remains. When he finds a Grand Canyon brochure deliberately planted on a pile of rocks outside Los Angeles, it gives him hope that there are other survivors like himself.
In a novella with only 34 pages, credit must be given to Messenger’s craftsmanship in developing intricate details that draw you into the characters and produce a short but rich story of adventure in a post-apocalyptic world. He puts a fresh, unique spin on a familiar premise combined with a well crafted plot. With his mysterious companion James, Tommy is eager to travel to Grand Canyon with an idea that a colony might have been established there.
Canyon Bound is fast paced, engaging and highly intriguing. The narrative is clean and vivid, fleshing out the characters and bringing the surroundings to life. It’s easy to connect with Tommy emotionally and share his burden of hope that there are still other people out there. On the whole, Canyon Bound is an excellent novella for any readers who want a quick but satisfying read. This is another great work from Messenger and I’ll always be on the lookout for his next work.
