Call Me When You're Dead is an intriguing drama by A.R. Taylor. When Eleanor Birch's charismatic best friend, Sasha Cole, meets a tragic end after asking her to contact her on-and-off boyfriend if something bad happens to her, Eleanor is unsure what she should do. However, due to her love for her friend, Eleanor reluctantly works toward honoring her last wishes and gets herself an assignment in New York. Sasha's ex-boyfriend, Jonathan "Jon" Neel, is the chief creative officer at a prominent Manhattan advertising agency, whose latest commercial for a restaurant has been sabotaged by an insider. Jon suspects veteran creative executive Guy Dranzier, whose personal life is in disarray. Meanwhile, Eleanor's plans for enacting revenge don't exactly go according to plan, as she finds herself conflicted with her feelings for Jon.
A.R. Taylor's novel distinguishes between the genres of tragi-comedy, rom-com, and drama. With inherently layered characters and an intricately crafted plot, Taylor tells a captivating story filled with dark humor and heartbreak with a hint of romance. As a reader, you're never quite sure about the plot's direction, and you find yourself all the more invested in it. All of Taylor's characters display something relatable despite their inner flaws and vulnerabilities, adding layers to their realistic personalities. There's also a decent amount of humor sprinkled throughout the pages. I was particularly impressed by Taylor's dialogue and her knack for creating situations where the characters' idiosyncrasies shine. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. If you like drama novels with dark humor, you'll love Call Me When You're Dead.
