Bummer: Our Pet Bighorn Sheep by Jylene Morgan is an adorable non-fiction children’s book told from the point of view of the author’s daughter. The family, comprised of Mom (a teacher), Dad (a biologist with the Idaho Fish and Game Department), and four children (including the narrator, then eight-year-old Sheri) moved to live in a house alongside a river in Challis, Idaho where Dad could study a herd of Bighorn sheep whose numbers had been dwindling. And that is how Bummer the Bighorn sheep became a part of the Morgan family.

Written in the first person, this book is a little advanced for early readers (grades Preschool to 1st Grade), but the illustrations are so cute they are sure to keep the attention of little ones as they are being read to. Although the illustrations are meant to be realistic, the color palette that was chosen is bright and whimsical, reminiscent of Oh, The Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss. The story itself is heartwarming and you feel a certain sense of privilege in sharing this family’s memories, including personal photos at the beginning of the book. In order to discover the touching how and whys, you’ll have to read the book yourself, and I’m happy to share that it’s a sweet, perfect read for everyone from elementary aged children to adults of all ages! If you find yourself wanting more of Bummer, the author mentions in the book that she’s writing the next installment in the series, Bummer and the Nanny Goat!
