Bubba and Squirt’s Mayan Adventure by Sherry Ellis is a delightful children’s adventure and the second in a series of stories involving brother and sister, Bubba and Squirt. The pair has discovered a hole underneath a large tree in the woods near their house in rural Ohio. Through this tree, they can access a portal that allows them to travel to different places around the world and experience mysteries and adventures in strange, foreign lands. Their previous adventure had taken them to China and this time they find themselves in the Central American country of Belize, at the site of an archeological excavation at one of the great centers of the Mayan civilization. There they team up with a young girl, Esmerelda, and her head archeologist father. Someone has been stealing artifacts from the site and Bubba and Squirt are determined to discover who the miscreant might be. They will run into some ancient Mayan magic and magical entities in their quest which will help them to solve the puzzling mystery of the missing artifacts.
Bubba and Squirt’s Mayan Adventure is a truly wonderful, magical romp through Mayan culture that is both entertaining and educational. Author Sherry Ellis has found the perfect balance between adventure and learning that characterizes an excellent children’s story. I was particularly impressed with the effort the author made to discuss the Mayan civilization and culture with readers, as well as an explanation of the words used and correct pronunciations of names. I felt Bubba and Squirt were readily identifiable as just two normal schoolkids out to have a bit of fun and discover adventure. Despite the slight gender stereotyping of the two, I am sure most children could readily identify with both of them and put themselves into the same situation in their minds. Any children’s book where even an adult comes away with a greater understanding of the subject matter than they had prior to reading is a success and the fun adventure of the tale is just the cherry on the top of the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this engaging read and can highly recommend it.
