Too many children don’t like who they are. They don’t like the color of their eyes, the color of their skin, or how tall or short they are. Brown Skin, Curly Hair, I Love Being Me! by Paula Swearingen tells the story of a young girl who has learned to appreciate who she is. While she may look different than some of her friends, she is more alike than different. She has learned to like who she is. The young girl understands how vital her ancestors and heritage are. Children will enjoy the illustrations created by Cameron Wilson. Paula has created a great role model for anyone with brown skin. Many say young girls and women have to be a specific color, weigh a certain amount, and demand adherence to other non-important essentials. Paula has filled a critical need by authoring this book.

There are more than enough negative books in this world. Too many teach that people have to fit a particular mold to be a person of value. Self-esteem is fragile. Because of this danger, it is time we learn to accept people for who they are, no matter who they are. Realizing the worth and value of someone does not mean you necessarily agree with their worldview. It means that being human gives us all a common core. Because of the kinship of humanity, we need to recognize the right of people to be and believe what they want. Brown Skin, Curly Hair, I Love Being Me! by Paula Swearingen goes a long way in teaching young girls to glory in their differences and hold onto their worldviews
