Broken Wing by Anna Klay is a novel about the haunted remains of our past that creeps into the lives of Ray Long and Skye Roosevelt. Ray only wants desperately to escape the memory of his drunk and abusive father by moving to the small town of Pettington. Meanwhile, Skye, who has been too long sheltered from the world, attempts to reach back into the past in order to find the mother she never knew. However, before both can discover their true place in the world and accept themselves and the people around them, they must battle their past and create their own future, despite what the cards of fate may have lain before them. But in a town where the only forms of escape are through booze or the local brothel, it will become harder for them both to find peace within themselves.
Anna Klay demonstrates in her debut novel her ability to display the complexities of the human heart, from its hidden angularities to the mores of its existence - acceptance and love. She paints the characters which number her novel just as strikingly as the darkly complex paintings strewn throughout the story. Although the plot turns can be as predictable as the Tarot cards that precede each chapter in the novel, Broken Wing retains its store of metaphysical truths and revelations. Klay most importantly shows us the capacity we have to master our own lives, contrary to what a Tarot card or any other divine entity may have determined for us.
