Celine and Alex were childhood sweethearts. When the story opens, they are happily married and raising three children with the support of their extended family on both sides. And then the unthinkable happens. Their youngest child, a son, is abducted from a playground, and Alex feels he is to blame. In Broken Strings, author Rachel Lane does a sterling job of taking us into the world of grieving parents who must struggle to care for their two daughters, particularly the guilt-ridden father who sinks into a state of deep depression. We relate both to Alex’s incapacity and to Celine’s struggle to remain strong while her husband is falling apart. Three years on, their child is found. And now the parents who have finally moved on to a new normal, separated and dating others, face yet another challenge. How do they help their son adjust to life in a family that was broken by his disappearance?

Broken Strings is both an entertaining tale and an insightful window into the workings of the minds of people faced with the unexpected disruption of the world that had seemed perfect. It should not surprise readers that Rachel Lane studied psychology. Her studies have equipped her with a deep understanding of how people cope differently with trauma and loss. Rachel creates characters who are credible and entirely relatable. The plot holds our attention and keeps us turning the pages as the characters struggle with changing circumstances and the emotional challenges of love and loss. The ending is deeply satisfying and Rachel shows much promise as an author. Broken Strings is a great read.
