Bringer of Light is a work of fiction in the science fiction, adventure, and suspense genres, and is the opening novel of the Children of Pella series. The work is best suited to the adult reading audience with non-graphic references to sex and violence, as well as some mild adult language throughout. Penned by author M. Thomas Apple, this engaging tale explores a near-future scenario where multinational conglomerates exploit the solar system's resources, leading to intense competition and the establishment of an asteroid-ore processing plant on the dwarf planet Ceres. When the spaceship Artemis discovers an asteroid containing alien genetic material, the crew unknowingly unleashes a series of transformative events. As they grapple with newfound abilities and insights, internal conflicts emerge, culminating in the establishment of a new community on Mars, dividing humanity between the Awakened and the Terrans who resist change.
Author M. Thomas Apple uses imagination and creativity to craft a thought-provoking journey into a future where humanity confronts its own limitations and encounters the unknown. I enjoyed the smooth and vivid storytelling style of the narrative, which is also rich in scientific detail and philosophical inquiry as it perfectly balances elements of science fiction with existential exploration. The characters' evolution from ordinary crew members to individuals grappling with newfound powers and existential truths is well-paced and delivered with fantastic attention to detail in dialogue and attitude. The author's vivid descriptions and immersive world-building transported me to the depths of space and the surface of Mars, evoking a sense of wonder and awe with vivid language. As the plot unfolded and tensions escalated, the pacing got better and better, and I found myself captivated by the ethical dilemmas and moral complexities faced by the characters as they were pushed to their limits. Overall, Bringer of Light is a highly recommended read for fans of gripping sci-fi with a deeper, more resonant meaning at its core.
