Brandon Cleans the Fish Tank is a children’s book written by Luke Mathius Harlow. On following his nose, Brandon realizes that the water in the fish tank smells bad. After turning off all electricity connected to the fish tank, Brandon and Luke remove the lid and carefully remove the tank’s water, being ever so careful not to hurt the fish. With most of the water gone, the plants are removed before Brandon and Luke use a net to catch the fish. After the tank is empty, Brandon then washes the rocks, pebbles, filter and plants which had been in the dirty water of the fish tank. The items are then carefully placed back into the tank, along with clean water. Once the water, plants, pebbles and filter are all just right, the fish are scooped back into the fish tank with Brandon’s small net. Brandon, Luke, and the fish are happy that the water is now clean and no longer smells bad.
Luke Mathius Harlow’s book about a small boy who takes responsibility for his pets by keeping the fish tank clean is a great way to build a child’s sense of responsibility for others. Well written, Brandon Cleans the Fish Tank goes into detail about the steps Brandon needs to take to clean the tank, showing not only how little effort is involved, but also how much fun it can be as a family effort, as well as how rewarding the task is afterwards. Proper tank maintenance is essential for any household which has an aquarium, and getting your child involved with keeping the water clean, the feeding routine, and healthy upkeep of a pet is essential at a young age, as it teaches children to respect the lives of animals under their care. I enjoyed this wonderful educational book for children and feel that it would ideally be stocked in home, day care and school libraries, as well as at pet stores where fish are sold.
