Braidy von Althuis and the Changeling Children is a work of fiction in the fantasy, paranormal adventure, and family drama sub-genres, and was penned and illustrated by author Cassidy Dwelis. In the fourth book in this exciting and creepy middle-grade series centering on protagonist Braidy von Althuis, we find our hero feeling quite abandoned when his father moves the family from Maple Hills to Ukraine. Friendless and lost in a whole new culture, things turn even worse when Braidy and his Aunt Liz are asked to attend court with the Fairy King. So begins a raucous adventure to escape the clutches of a wicked king, and face the family’s own tragedies and tensions in the process.
Author Cassidy Dwelis has crafted another excellent installment in a very engrossing series that will captivate both the young and young at heart. Much in the flavor of the likes of the Addams Family and Darren Shan, this is a really enjoyably creep aesthetic for a fantasy tale, one which celebrates the unusual, but is also highly relatable for its emotional resonance in the storytelling. Braidy deals with some very difficult themes for an eleven-year-old, which are incorporated seamlessly into the excellent adventure plot, and so the novel also teaches its readers valuable life lessons and family dynamics. I was also very impressed by the imaginative nature of the plot, putting original twists on folklore ideas like the changeling children. Overall, I would highly recommend Braidy von Althuis and the Changeling Children and the series in general to fans of high-quality MG fantasy with plenty of horror, hi-jinks, and heart.
