Boomer Tales: Hula Hoops, Hippies, Hemp, and Hijinks by LaRue Agresti is an autobiography that will take you places and have you grinning like a fool. I really loved reading this book. You know why? LaRue Agresti told her story with all her heart, and you can feel that in her words. She has a way with words that will make you feel everything she is feeling, you will see what she wants you to see, and understand what she wants you to understand.
She grew up in an Italian family in Chicago. She takes you to the very beginning of her existence; she talks about her parents and her family. She talks about her parents’ battle with mental illness and cancer, and how the family stood together to fight it with them. We get to see early Chicago from the eyes of a person who lived in it with her family; we get to see a new side of the hippie years, and maybe understand that on a newer level.
Books like these just make you appreciate your past and be grateful for what you have. You will learn about Baby Boomers and see how their lives were different from ours. She tells her story so eloquently, it was written really well, and that makes it an extra special book to read. I finished it in about 3-4 hours because it was that good. I was laughing, crying, and smiling throughout. Miss Agresti has a gift and I am so glad she decided to share it with us.
