Blood Line: Secrets is the new paranormal thriller by debut author, The Tale Monger. The unique pen name is an early giveaway as to the sense of humor and creative tone that this writer uses to weave together a tale. This story follows a YA genre as well and the protagonist is 15-year-old Aaron Hawke. Torn between two worlds, Aaron finds himself struggling for identity and a path that will make sense to him as he tries to uncover what is real and what is made up -- a line that gets thinner by the day. The 335-page story is divided into more than 80 chapters and set in England in the late 14th Century.
I felt that some of the names had the worn out feeling that you get when reading classic fantasy. An unfortunate side-effect of historical romance and fantasy, names like Ellond, Killmarnock, Madrych, or Slova Fuscari, and even Story Monger might leave some readers wondering about naming conventions rather than story lines. The unfamiliar characters and even author’s pen name are personal choices that might work better as readership improves, but could turn off readers early on. The language and editing could use some audience-focused polish but otherwise this was a well written story. The historical elements are innately credible and work well to create alternate fairy tales, urban legends, and horror stories.
I enjoyed this novel. It was a fun read that opened up a world of possibilities for this author to create a number of stories to monger for his readers.
