Blemished But Not Broken by Kay Kinsley Adams is a gritty memoir that chronicles one woman’s journey from victimhood to inner freedom — an unashamed soul-searching and a brutally honest account that is a powerful indictment of what debases the individual and robs them of their self-worth. The book starts with a somewhat poignant and disturbing premise — living with a mentally sick mother. Kay Kinsley Adams shares her experience of what it was like to live with a mother who was mentally ill, to be abused and molested as a child, and to grow up with stains on her soul. But then there is a moment of epiphany when she decided to stand up for herself and break free from the psychological burden others had placed on her. It was the day she decided to take control of her life.
Told in a voice that is both honest and confident, Blemished But Not Broken will draw tears from readers and it will inspire noble sentiments in them as well. Ms. Adams’s story reflects a lot of the pain and trauma that many women go through, albeit silently. The prose is beautiful and the author does a wonderful job in creating a vivid setting and in offering images that will thrill readers. I enjoyed the descriptive nature of the prose, which at times sounds poetic, such as when she describes the beach with the seagulls and the sand. Themes of solitude, trauma, parenting, child abuse, and family are crafted into the story in a skillful way. Blemished But Not Broken will remind those who have been broken that they can heal and give those who feel stuck the courage to forge a path for themselves. A very inspiring tale!
