Since its inception dating back to 1845, the New York City Police Department has had its share of both troubles and achievements. The difficulties included occupational hazards, political interference, and the ever-changing dynamics of crime and terrorism. Other factors involve balancing public safety with civil liberties and community relations. Public scrutiny is just one among the many problems that are still bedeviling the NYPD and many other police departments in the US and internationally. With all these hurdles to overcome, the NYPD has seen more than a thousand of its members lose their lives. In George P. Norris’ Bleeding Blue: A History of Line of Duty Deaths in the NYPD, the author delves deeper into police killings focusing on the line-of-duty deaths in the NYPD from its inception to the twenty-first century. Enthusiasts of non-fiction, history, and true crime books will love George P. Norris’ Bleeding Blue. Norris takes readers into the political, judicial, and law enforcement realm of the US in this short yet comprehensive read. With detailed accounts of each topic addressed in the book, I was taken through the NYPD’s eventful history chronologically. Reading about how prematurely, unjustly, and painfully some of the lives of the brave men in the NYPD were ended brought me to tears. Norris captures the cultural, political, and socioeconomic nuances of the different eras distinctively, giving a raw feel of the prevailing circumstances and general way of life. The images accompanying the narrative capture the sad and tragic moments in the NYPD’s history fittingly. I found the facts on black revolutionary groups, the Italian mafia, crime families, and drug dealers to be particularly intriguing.
