Jessie enjoyed spending the summers with her Gramps in the disused lighthouse on Beacon Island with his little black dog, Digga. Jessie was out walking Digga one day, and of course he was curious and sniffing around, when she heard voices. The voices came from a girl and boy building one of the biggest sandcastles Jessie had ever seen, and naturally Digga had to start digging too. As they begin talking and exploring the island, Digga ends up in a cave and digs up a hidden message from the mysterious 'Captain' that hints at buried treasure. Who is the Captain, why are Jessie and her friends being followed by an old galleon, and will they solve the strange riddles that lead them to the booty?
Hidden treasure stories will always capture the attention of kids, and I think Black Dog’s Treasure would be a wonderful book for any child to read. It is really for ages seven to eleven, but I think younger children would love to have someone read this story to them. I enjoyed it myself, so I know anyone else would. Maureen Vincent-Northam does a wonderful job of writing this story, and it has enough mystery and suspense to keep children quiet and reading until they finish it. The book is short, 26 pages, so it could be read in one sitting. I like the characters: Jessie is full of adventure and willing to explore wherever Digga wants to go. The two make a really cute and fun pair. I encourage you to check out Black Dog’s Treasure by Maureen Vincent-Northam for an entertaining read for your child.
