Birth Right: Galak’s Rising is a work of action-packed dystopian fiction penned by author Christina Goebel, and forms the first book in the Birth Right series. Suitable for readers of all ages thanks to its PG content, this engaging work combines science fiction, cyberpunk, fantasy, and dystopia to present a world unlike any other. We see the before and after effects of the Great Technological War which changes society forever and in the future this world is ruled by the progeny-obsessed Galak. Valki women are forced to compete for the Birth Right – the right to bear Galak’s children - and the struggles of a pair of teenage Valki twins changes the fate of the world forever.
Author Christina Goebel has woven a lot of successful elements into this highly engaging and entertaining vision of a dark, dystopian future. The conceptual integration of technological trauma with genetic enhancements is a frighteningly realistic creation not too far from our own reality, which makes the characters and their evil plots highly believable. I loved 99 and 100, who were both conceptually brilliant as players in Galak’s cruel game, but also heartfelt heroines who were well developed as individuals and incredible as a pair. The illustrations also help to bring the more foreign concepts to life, beautifully drawn by Kent Burles to add further emotion and cinematic quality to the reading experience. Overall, Birth Right: Galak’s Rising is a startlingly good start to a high-concept and high-quality dystopian series – a read not to be missed.
