Billy Is Nasty To Ant: Jealousy: Billy Growing Up, Volume 3 is a children's book for grades 4-6 written by James Minter and illustrated by Helen Rushworth. Billy, Ant and Tom were excited to hear about the end-of-term project their teacher, Miss Tompkins, was assigning them. The class was to divide into groups of three and produce a 30-second television advertisement. The three pals knew they'd ace this working together, but even before they began to discuss ideas, Ant was already jumping out of his seat and telling Miss Tompkins what they would be doing. Billy wasn't too impressed with Ant's behavior in class. For one thing, Billy had always thought he was Miss Tompkins' favorite, and he resented Ant's behavior in getting her attention almost as much as he feared she was beginning to like Ant more than him. When they were ready to perform their commercial, Ant volunteered them for the special showing in front of the whole school. They didn't win first prize, but Ant did win the special prize for the student who made the biggest contribution. Billy didn't think that was fair at all, but Grandad later helped him understand that Billy and Ant, while best friends, had different skills. Billy was good at math and skateboarding, while Ant was a natural at organizing.
James Minter's book for children, grades 4-6, Billy Is Nasty To Ant: Jealousy: Billy Growing Up, Volume 3, tackles the very difficult and often painful subject of jealousy. Friends can and do often feel passed over by each another; it could be grades received in school, being a teacher’s pet, or athletic prowess. It's hard to see past the disappointment or envy to realize that everyone is good at something and to be able to feel truly happy for your friend. Minter's story illustrates this beautifully as Billy learns to get over his resentment and jealousy over Ant's winning the award. Rushworth's drawings are fun and perfectly fit the plot of this story. Jacko makes a perfect jackosaurus rex until he gets loose and bounds off into the audience to find Max, and the three boys' Snap, Crackle and Pop costumes are inspired. Billy Is Nasty to Ant entertains as it educates and is most highly recommended.
