Author Biography

When Donald Trump was elected President, the idea was unfathomable to me. How could someone so incurious, indecent, and intolerant become the leader of America. That's when I figured some sort of cosmic intervention was at play, like in the movie "Big". When I told my girlfriend I wanted to create a comic book that satirized Trump's election with a connection to the movie , my question for her was what to title it. She said, "Bigly". Of course!

Bigly is a political graphic novel/comic written and illustrated by Seth Levens. It was 1992, and the Soviet Union had collapsed. Vladimir Putin was approached by Raskol, a political henchman who had discovered a most impressive machine sitting in a defunct Soviet Military Supply Depot. Zoltariskov, the result of cutting-edge research by Russia’s finest minds, would grant the user two wishes. Putin could use this machine to make the USSR great again -- or could he? His first wish, which was “Make Russia best it can be,” seemed to make no difference. Putin and Raskol figured that Russia must already be at its best. But what about making other countries worse than they already are? How about they wish for America to be changed into “Worse Russia”? It would take some time for the magic to happen, but then, in 2015, the long-awaited plan, hatched with the help of Zoltariskov, began to bear fruit. Donald needed to be respected. Why didn’t he get that respect? He was wealthy, handsome and smart. Why didn’t anyone realize it? How could he make them take notice?

Seth Levens’ brilliant political graphic novel/comic, Bigly, will infuriate anyone who considers a red MAGA cap to be the height of sartorial fashion, and will no doubt spark a mix of laughter and tears in the rest of us. I loved the homage Levens gives to the classic comedy, Big, and found myself wishing that I could be granted a few wishes myself. Levens’ illustrations work so well with his story, and his dark humor is more than welcome during these troubled times. Worse Russia? Not if we have anything to do with it, but some seem to be quite fine with the concept. Bigly reminds those of us on both sides of the aisle who know something is wrong to see a bit of humor even in the direst of situations. Where there’s laughter, there’s hope, I guess. Bigly is most highly recommended.
