Jordaina Sydney Robinson’s first book in a series, Beyond Dead: A Bridget Sway Novel is truly an original and unique work. The story begins with Bridget’s first days in the afterlife. Not only does she have to learn the many rules and regulations of this new world, she has to dress in a non-flattering uniform and has no toiletries (hairbrush, comb) to appear presentable. Then, she finds a dead ghost in her locker. The adventure of solving the mystery of who killed this man, along with other crimes along the way, has begun. Bridget soon finds a friend, Sabrina, who was a private investigator when alive. Learning the methods used in the afterlife, such as tunneling, misting, and being summoned, investigating several mysteries at once, determining who is safe and who is dangerous, and trying to stay “alive” make for an exciting adventure indeed.
There are many intriguing characters in Jordaina Sydney Robinson’s first mystery novel. It is easy for the reader to grasp the personality of each character through Ms. Robinson’s detailed, picturesque descriptions. The narrative sections are crisp and clear. The conversations between Bridget and Sabrina are sassy and quick-witted, fun for the reader. This brings a balance of lightheartedness against some scary happenings. Just like Bridget and Sabrina, the reader learns the nonsensical “rules” of the afterlife, adding more liveliness to the story. Happily, this is the first of a series, and it will be fun to see what new adventures are on the horizon!
