Beyond Bourbon Street is a work of fiction in the women’s fiction and interpersonal drama sub-genres and was penned by author Nikesha Elise Williams. Written for adult audiences due to some mature scenes and complex emotional content, this engrossing personal drama takes us through the trials and tribulations of a couple on the verge of a new adventure that terrifies them. As Bombei and Graigh Halvert prepare to have their first child, the ramifications and deep emotional traumas from their own childhoods loom and cause friction within their families. Set against the backdrop of a still-recovering New Orleans, this is a highly emotive drama with a lot to offer for women’s fiction fans.
Author Nikesha Elise Williams has crafted an engrossing work of interpersonal drama that focuses on trauma, family, and those seemingly small issues that we all have which can be exacerbated and turn into lifechanging moments when the pressure is on. I was fascinated and deeply affected by the portrayal of New Orleans in reparation and the characters who were still reeling from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, and the author treats this theme with emotional sensitivity to craft a realistic and deep background for the drama itself. Bombei and Graigh are well-developed characters with distinct thought and speech presentations, and indeed I found the dialogue to be realistic and compelling between them from cover to cover. Overall, I would highly recommend Beyond Bourbon Street to readers seeking solid emotional realism, a slow-burning and deeply engrossing plotline and plenty of atmosphere to boot.
