Inspired by a true story, Jeremy Campbell's Between the Mountains follows the lives of the inhabitants of a small Southern town. After being pelted by stones and shot with a BB gun on the road, Roscoe, an old, black labrador retriever, has won over the hearts of everyone in the North Star Community Center. He is particularly close to center director J.D., who runs a tight ship alongside his friends to serve the town's needs. Meanwhile, Arley Flores, a young college student, is back in town, afraid of falling back into the same controlled pattern of her old life. Additionally, there is Emma, a local entrepreneur who is dreading the return of her childs's biological father, Xavier, who is also responsible for Roscoe's injuries. How will J.D. and his friends navigate the shenanigans that have erupted all over town?
Between the Mountains showcases how close-knit communities and friends stand up for each other in the face of adversity. Based on the true-life story of a dog, author Jeremy Campbell spins a heartwarming yarn that is bound to leave readers with smiles on their faces. The characters are salt-of-the-earth type people you have probably met in your day-to-day life. The plot focuses on the dog, Roscoe, an adorable labrador you can't help but love, and the people whose lives are touched by the canine. The cast of characters is large, but everyone gets their fair share of page time. J.D., Roscoe, Poppy, Emma, Arley, Charles, and Anna were my favorites. Above all, this is the kind of book that rouses a sense of hope and unity among readers. Recommended to animal lovers and readers who love slice-of-life stories.
