Between The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea by James Gaffigan is a suspense/thriller set in Echo Pass, Colorado. The plot unfolds slowly and little by little throughout the book. The lives of Florence and Mort Lambert, their daughter Gloria, and many more are again and again inevitably drawn to and intertwined with Echo Pass. The characters are complex and multi-layered. Just when I thought I finally got an idea of the plot and characters, the book took a different turn. It is so full of twists and turns to keep readers glued to the edge of their seat. I’m trying not to say too much regarding the plot, lest it becomes a spoiler, but I absolutely loved this book.
I loved Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea not just for the story, which was in itself wonderful, but also for the writing. The story is replete with similes and metaphors and the writing is descriptive and beautiful. One curious aspect of this book is that it does not specifically stick to any one point of view. Instead, the story, with its facts and flowery language, is presented before readers, who are open to drawing their own conclusions. I enjoyed this book so much that I took a lot of time and read it slowly, lest I missed something vital. This is a book which must be savoured and read slowly to be enjoyed. I felt that Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea was a truly great read.
