Better Lucky Than Good (From Outlaw Biker to Airline Pilot, And Beyond) by Dale E Arenson is a memoir about the author’s unconventional path to becoming a commercial pilot. Dale narrates his life as an outlaw biker and the events that led him to change his ways. He tried being a salesman and a husband, but these didn’t go as planned. Dale still wished to find something fulfilling, and he found the missing piece when he first saw a Cessna 140 aircraft on sale. Without experience, Dale bought the Cessna impulsively and luckily found an instructor. Dale built up his flight hours and decided to move to California to pursue his dream of becoming a commercial pilot. He embarks on several adventurous flights that eventually land him a job with Bob Hoover, a famous military and airshow pilot.
Dale E Arenson’s life is full of adventure and intense moments. Every time he was down, luck came his way. Dale’s thrill for adventure and danger and his kind and selfless acts toward his father-in-law and friend showcased his fearless and kind personality. Better Lucky Than Good is well-written, with a casual tone and comedic moments that make it fun to read. The book has a consistent format, and each chapter begins with an inspirational quote that gives the reader an intriguing insight into the contents. It also contains an aviation glossary to help readers understand unfamiliar terms. The book is just a glimpse into Dale’s life. The author has more books covering various aspects of his life, and I cannot wait to read more.
