Bernice: A Fiery Story of Love and Family: In Her Daughter's Pen by Bernice Haney and Janet C. Thomas begins with the birth of a girl child, the eleventh among twelve children of Smiths, who named her Bernice Elvira. Her folks being always on the move, she had memories of many different schools, ranches, farms, homes, hills and many kinds of fun, filling her childhood with many colors. That included her first date and the first kiss, quitting school altogether, and finding a job as a babysitter. As time passed by, she faced more challenges; falling in love, having a child, living with an abusive husband, and the need to be self reliant. She picks up another job, but something or other crops up to add to her troubles, and even the divorce proceedings initiated by her do not progress smoothly.

Bernice by Bernice Haney and Janet C. Thomas is an emotional roller-coaster. It is not usual for one to come across a situation where each and every falling slice of toast will land with its buttered side down or the zipper will misbehave only when someone is dressing in a hurry. This is thus an unusual biography; not many will be unfortunate enough to be tormented in life, as Bernice was. Also, very few will get a chance to feel such self-esteem and pride, as she must have felt with the neutralization of every such attack. Bernice is an inspiration for all, and more so for those in search of the light at the end of tunnel.

This book has a large following and the more I dug into it the more readers I found who recommended it. This is an awesome story. Much of it kept me on edge. I really look forward to the next book by this author. I really like how easy it is to understand. I've never been a huge reader but this was exciting to follow Bernice's life.
