Beneath a Macon Moon by Laurean Brooks was an enjoyable read. The story takes the reader from Brentwood, Texas to Macon, Georgia where the heroine, Jaela Andrews, has relocated. The first few pages contain a number of life-changing events that create heartbreak and angst for the heroine. She arrives at her new residence, only to find a handsome handyman, Eric Larsen, and his brother have contracted to work on her home for the summer. Peace and quiet fall by the wayside, along with Jaela’s determination to ignore the stranger who falls for her within days of meeting. Eric and Jaela enjoy witty banter that contains a few barbs when tempers flare.
Laurean Brooks has created delightful neighbor characters in George and Madge Wilcox. Madge’s antics will keep a smile on the reader’s face. Madge’s mental and physical health illustrates realistically to the reader how confused and distorted thinking can become if a person is not healthy —physically, mentally, and spiritually. A number of conversations concern salvation and forgiveness. They were critical to the development of the engaging characters, and also very insightful to the reader as well. The author does a good job of placing secondary characters into the story, adding depth to create meaningful situations. Laurean Brooks tackles a few sensitive issues, such as struggling with the loss of a close loved one. Her thoughts ring true, as does the need for acceptance, forgiveness, and moving on. Forgiveness is an area battled by both the hero and heroine, and maybe the reader, too. Good story!
