Believed by Michael James Emberger follows the story of Kelsea, a young mermaid in college who was just trying to live her life normally. However, things are never that simple. After losing her best friend Coral, things got worse as the star hockey player Chad begins to harass Kelsea. Despite her rejection and the fact that she has a boyfriend, Chad persists and ends up raping her. Now Kelsea must fight a battle to be heard and for the truth to come out.
Believed by Michael James Emberger is an emotional rollercoaster of a story. We see Kelsea experience hardship from the very beginning and how it seemed to snowball as Chad began to take a sick interest in her. This account left me in such an emotional state as it covered various sensitive topics and themes. The pacing is a bit fast in the beginning but slows down once you get to the main issue within the story. What I liked most about this is not only how this tale brings awareness concerning those who have been sexually harassed and assaulted, but also the feelings of the victims and the type of trauma experienced by them.
While I enjoyed the story itself, the narration by Kristina Rothe didn’t fit with such an emotional subject, although it did not prevent me from appreciating this audiobook.
