Gary is part goat and part moose or, in other words, a goat moose. His mother was a moose and his father a goat – quite the combination. Unfortunately for Gary, it meant he was really different. Other animals didn’t know quite what to make of this goat moose creature. So, Gary decided it was time to venture further afield and see if there were any other different creatures like him (or not like him, however you want to look at it). On his journey, he came across a tiger toad, Terry, who being part tiger and part toad, was just as different as Gary but in a different way. They bonded and learned a valuable lesson about differences, friendship, acceptance and just being oneself. After all, isn’t that the real adventure of life?
Mr. Nicholas Cull’s picture book story, Being Different is OK, is a fun adventure for young readers that teaches them valuable lessons about differences. We’re all different and it really doesn’t matter how different we are. After all, what a boring world it would be if we were all the same, don’t you agree? It’s what’s inside that really matters. And that’s what Gary the goat moose and Terry the tiger toad discover. The illustrations are colorful, simple but very ‘different’ in a very good sense of the word. The plot follows Gary’s journey as he seeks acceptance and friendship. This is a beautiful story, compassionately told, with a dash of humor to carry it along.
