Beautiful Nightmare is a hot, harrowing and heartbreaking work of epic fantasy penned by author L. C. Son, and forms the opening book of a series. As the title might suggest, this sweeping novel of emotional transformation begins in all the joys of love and romance, then slowly descends into darkness when the truth is revealed. All of this turmoil happens to Damina Nicaud, a would-be bride who is plagued by visions of a dark and mysterious man. When her supernatural heritage is revealed, these twisted dreams are brought into reality, and she discovers that the love she has been brewing is a power strong enough to change the world around her.
Damina will be an instantly relatable heroine for readers as we encounter her hopes, dreams, and heartbreak when she discovers the truth about her would-be husband. With her future dreams shattered, the enigmatic Dalcour arrives, and this is where the plot really heats up. Author L. C. Son presents characters painted beautifully with lavish words, hinting at darkness and sharpness beneath their gorgeous exteriors. Dark and dangerous, the plot takes on a likewise inviting and sinister turn, balancing both as Damina faces her fears and develops beyond what she thought possible. The relationship between the central pair of full of nice and nasty surprises, keeping readers on their toes, and the overall plot arc ends book one with plenty of satisfaction, but also much more to learn. Overall, Beautiful Nightmare is an accomplished work of fantasy that offers delightful darkness to its readers.
