Beautiful Day by Elin Hilderbrand, believe it or not, takes place completely within a long wedding weekend. Jenna’s mother, Beth, when she realized she was going to die of ovarian cancer before seeing her youngest daughter married, wrote out a notebook full of explicit instructions for every detail. Everything from the color of the dresses, type of flowers, where to hold the rehearsal dinner and what to serve, where to hold the reception and what to serve, the music, who to invite, even “if your father has remarried by then;” seemingly no detail was overlooked. Of course, as can happen when extended families get together, glitches can and do happen. What began as a storybook wedding on Nantucket was complicated by secret lovers, old friends, exes, jealous spouses, and even the growth of an old tree. How Margo resolves most of the problems as matron of honor, and what she can’t resolve, will keep you guessing until the end.
I tried not to notice when I observed similarities between some of the characters in Beautiful Day and some in my own life! I could relate to a few of the situations and, truth be told, this book gave me new insight into them. But overall, Beautiful Day is a very entertaining “read” via audio CDs and even my husband enjoyed listening to it as a change from watching movies on the weekend. Characters were realistically portrayed and likable for the most part (unless you were not supposed to like them!). I’m looking forward to reading more of Elin Hilderbrand’s books.
