In Beasley Helps by Rosie Russell, Beasley’s a little disturbed to find his favorite trees being cut down. He’s the resident, happy-go-lucky dog who takes care of everyone and everything at the farm in Shady Brook Lane. When he learns the reason for the trees’ demise, he reconciles himself that this change is for the greater good. Farmer Bill has brought four destitute animals to the farm - Cocoa the horse who was rescued from the brush fires, Fred the pig who was abandoned, Jeter the black cat no one wanted, and Maxine the old dog everyone ignored at the shelter. These new additions need someplace to live, a shelter, and hence the new barn. Cocoa is fearful of the barn and won’t budge, at least not until Beasley comes up with a great idea to entice him to enter.

Rosie Russell’s picture book, Beasley Helps, is the third book in the Beasley series. Once again, Beasley shows his resourcefulness and his kind heart. The plot follows Beasley as he investigates the new barn being built, the new animals being introduced to the farm, and some pretty ingenious ways to make music, all leading up to one big happy farm family. The language and plot are simple and will appeal to young readers. Dialogue is used effectively, and the illustrations are bright, bold, and colorful. At the end of the book, the author provides detailed instructions on how to make some of the musical instruments Beasley used in the story. She also includes background details on animal rescues and how everyone can help locally. This is a charming, sweet, entertaining, and educational story.
