Be Fruitful... by Benjamin M. Weilert offers a chilling and unique take on dystopian fiction. Told through journal entries, the story draws you into Frank and his family's harrowing experience as a seemingly innocent rabbit population transforms into a catastrophic threat. What begins with a simple news report about vanishing rabbits in Japan quickly spirals into a gripping account of societal collapse, food shortages, and disease. Frank’s reflections on everyday moments, such as his annoyance with family gatherings and holiday traditions, stand in stark contrast to the escalating chaos around him, creating an unsettling sense of normalcy before the imminent downfall. This narrative serves as a powerful reminder of nature's fragile balance and how quickly it can tip into chaos if left unchecked.
I was completely captivated by Benjamin M. Weilert's storytelling. The notion of rabbits becoming the harbingers of humanity’s downfall is both unexpected and brilliantly crafted. The pacing is spot on; it starts innocently, but with each journal entry, the tension mounts to an almost unbearable level. The characters felt authentic, particularly Frank, whose dry humor and fierce determination to protect his family added significant depth to the narrative. The clever use of holidays as markers for a time lent an air of relatability that made the progression of events feel both familiar and unsettling. The themes of unintended consequences and the fragility of our ecosystem provoke deep thought without coming off as preachy. However, some of the imagery involving rabbits might be unsettling for sensitive readers, but it undeniably heightens the horror of the situation. Be Fruitful… is a story that stays with you long after you turn the last page, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to fans of innovative and thought-provoking dystopian fiction.
