Barry the Brave: A Flowerageous Journey to Courage by Joshua Swank tells the empowering story of a dinosaur who stands up for what is right. Living in a lush jungle, Barry the adventurous blue brachiosaurus finds many wonders of nature to explore and discover. One day, after Barry spots an extraordinarily beautiful pink flower, some other dinosaurs arrive and they also take note of the delicate flower. However, these troublemakers don’t share Barry’s appreciation for such an impressive example of floral beauty. Instead, they decide to taunt Barry by destroying the helpless flower. Knowing that these bullies are being cruel, Barry builds up the courage to protect the flower and stop the other dinos from continuing their unkind acts.
Many kids love dinosaurs and will naturally be drawn to Barry and his adventures in the mountains and rivers near his home. With simple words and loose rhymes, Joshua Swank conveys an easy-to-follow story that offers a wonderful lesson on bravery. The artwork provided by Tincho Schmidt beautifully enhances the narrative, giving life to the text and stirring the imagination. I love the color scheme and style of the illustrations, which are uncomplicated yet highly expressive. But the true highlight of this tale is the priceless message that can benefit all young readers as they encounter bullies, observe injustices, and face tests of their integrity. Showing the value of doing the right thing even when it is difficult, Barry the Brave is an attractively illustrated picture book that young children will surely enjoy.
