International Book Award Finalists Pria Dee and YoungJu Kim have written an uplifting picture book that provides a glimpse into the everyday lives of the inhabitants of a small village in India. Balu Saves the Day follows the life of Balu and his mother. Young readers will be introduced to the culture of India, from the open market stalls to the different wares sold. These show readers the kinds of relationships created with the different vendors and how the community members interact with each other using a barter system. They mention Diwali and some of the customary foods like Gulab Jamun. Although there are many delights in Indian life, hardships also occur. They all work together daily to succeed and live well.
The importance of having a strong, caring, and supportive community is clear as Balu interacts with the vendors of his neighborhood and the doctor. They all show compassion as they assist him in bartering to help take care of his mother. I also love the concept that one is never too small to make a difference. Balu shows bravery and determination to provide for his family. The glossary at the end helps young readers understand the culture of India. I look forward to teaching my son about Indian culture and exploring their cuisine. The images are very vibrant. Pria Dee and YoungJu Kim have written a great first book to introduce youngsters to a new culture. I would recommend Balu Saves the Day to parents of children from preschool to third grade.
