At the risk of sounding corny and unprofessional: there’s gold in them thar hills! The hills being Rachel Thompson’s superb and timely social-media marketing guidebook, BadRedhead Media 30-Day Book Marketing Challenge, addressed specifically to the needs of authors whom she assumes are already producing a superior product. To immediately mix metaphors, Ms. Thompson’s book is so meaty right from the start, one is likely to overstuff oneself with informative protein. Pulling back into a literary stance: this highly practical, highly informative, highly knowledgeable book is so accessible to the reader and the novice author/marketeer, and so practical and do-able in its challenge, it should easily become the contemporary Bible for any indie writer or professional do-it-yourselfer.

In BadRedhead Media 30-Day Book Marketing Challenge, a how-to book of the highest caliber, Rachel Thompson proceeds to give clear, concise, easy-to-accomplish daily assignments for quickly establishing an increasingly brilliant, personally-branded presence (yes, authors need to brand themselves) within the infinitely expansive virtual but real world of the Internet, specifically through social media. From the hidden worth of Twitter to the creativity of YouTube, and everything in between, Ms. Thompson effortlessly turns a perceived behemoth of intimidation into a comfortable but dynamic marketing routine. She has done all the backbreaking work necessary to excavate this lucrative mine (back to my original outburst); now you simply have to pan quietly for the gold. But I guarantee you this: the gold is there. Rachel Thompson keeps the promise she makes boldly in her subtitle: How to Energize Your Book Sales in a Month! She might easily have added: While All the Time Having Loads of Fun!

BadRedhead Media 30-Day Book Marketing Challenge: How to energize your book sales in a month is a non-fiction writing/publishing book written by Rachel Thompson. Thompson is an author, blogger, book marketing consultant and social media trainer, and has been blogging and publishing for over eight years. Her book is a hands-on guide to marketing which is divided into 30 segments; each designed to be completed in a day. She presents each subject, examines it in detail, gives instructional links and concludes with a set of assignments.

Thompson begins her challenge with an introduction to Twitter and then Facebook, acknowledging that while many writers may not feel comfortable with or appreciate Twitter, their readers do. She guides first-time and casual users through each step of the getting acquainted process and shows how to make the most of each service she discusses. Her chapters on Facebook differentiate between personal and author pages, illustrate how to create page tabs and introduce Notes, a new Facebook feature for posts. In later chapters, Thompson introduces marketing, marketing plans, and why you, as a writer, should care about marketing. She also covers the importance of maintaining a professional website, demystifies Google Analytics, and discusses Amazon publishing options.

Who would have guessed it could be so much fun to get involved in the book marketing process? Rachel Thompson's non-fiction writing/publishing guide, BadRedhead Media 30-Day Book Marketing Challenge certainly opened my eyes to the recreational aspects of what many writers dread. Thompson entertains as she informs and, somehow, makes learning the skills necessary to do a decent job of marketing your book fun. She supplies screenshots, links to cool apps such as Pablo by Buffer, and myriad ways to test your blog, website and social media pages to ensure the best possible results. I was fascinated with the possibilities I could see when I tried using Pablo as well as many of the other links she provides, and ended up bookmarking a number of them for further study.

Her chapter assignments are brilliant! They reinforce the subject matter presented in the chapter and, if completed carefully, form the basis of a personalized Marketing Strategy. I have read a number of books on marketing, but none came close to delivering such an accessible and comprehensive package. Thompson’s a naturally gifted teacher as well. Her enthusiasm for the subject is apparent throughout the book, and every link I clicked and instruction I followed led to the desired result. Whether you’re an author, blogger, or anyone interested in navigating social media and marketing, this book’s a keeper, and it’s a pleasure to work through as well. BadRedhead Media 30-Day Book Marketing Challenge: How to energize your book sales in a month is most highly recommended.

Also handy tools such as Hootsuite, Buffer, and WooBox.

The author, Rachel Thompson, has created a very useful and concise marketing tool which combines with her obvious sense of humour to produce a workbook that is informative and practical. Divided into easily attainable daily tasks, together with assignments, it is also a step-by-step guide to tackling the maze of social media available to use in marketing a book. There is also a wealth of useful information and helpful resources on using all the online sites, helpful hints on maximising profile, and in-depth examination of blogging, explaining the importance of this tool, and providing links to blogging sites to use in self-promotion. Perhaps not for the novice internet user, this book is in itself a complete guide to building and promoting an online presence. BadRedhead Media 30-Day Book Marketing Challenge by Rachel Thompson is an instruction manual on how to energize your book sales in a month. Described by many in the writing industry as a genius in social media, Rachel Thompson discusses several strategies which are often overlooked when an author is trying to get their book noticed. Spaced out over four weeks, you are given a step-by-step run-down on the right and wrong way to go about achieving higher sales.

One of the very first things I noticed was the language used throughout the book. While most instructional books are structured to the point that they are almost clinical, Rachel Thompson delivers a well-written dialogue with impact; you would be forgiven for thinking she were standing in front of you and speaking, friend to friend. Her dossier speaks for itself, with an impressive range of literary levels within companies and publications, the heads of which speak very highly of her work. BadRedhead Media 30-Day Book Marketing Challenge gives you all the tools and resources which you will need to successfully promote your book, allowing you to read and work the challenge at your own pace. Nothing is rushed so there is no need for panic.

Prior to reading Rachel’s book, I thought Facebook and Twitter were the only social media platforms people take notice of, but there are many more, allowing each author to reach audiences far and wide, enabling them to expand their sales across oceans via the internet. I look forward to reaping the benefits of the BadRedhead Media 30-Day Book Marketing Challenge over the next few weeks, and recommend this easy-to-read publication to all authors, whether represented or independent, who want to spread the word about their latest book.

BadRedhead Media 30-Day Book Marketing Challenge by Rachel Thompson is an easily read tutorial in book marketing that focuses on social media and common sense judgement calls that I see as any writer’s must-have resource. Even though Thompson dubs this as a thirty-day challenge, this is a valuable instructional guide that not only assists in marketing, but gives the reader in-depth instruction on the rules of Twitter, Facebook, Amazon, Google, blogging, and video involvement in successful publishing. I appreciate the relaxed tone that is presented in this massive topic. Although described as a thirty-day challenge, this reviewer views it as an everyday guide to approaching the sales market. Thirty days is just not enough time to devote to the priceless advice and tips on successful marketing. Thompson has a keen sense of an average writer’s economic status that she willingly addresses with a plethora of opportunities, from pricey to downright doable.

For an inexperienced marketer, this is an essential guide to be revisited often. Even with the ever-changing world of social media, the suggestions published in this book are very adaptable and can be easily conformed to any writer’s needs. The amount of resource tools (web links and additional instructional guides) are amazing and I plan to investigate as many as possible in perfecting my own book marketing campaign. Rachel Thompson pulls no punches in this “in your face” guide to marketing.
