Bad Luck Kitty is a children’s picture book written by Lynne Gobioff and illustrated by Lorenzo Kirkpatrick. It follows the life of a black kitten who is often misunderstood and considered to bring misfortune to those who adopt her. After a series of failed adoptions and numerous incidents, including a mistaken fish-stealing incident and an escape attempt involving a canary, the kitty earns a bad reputation. She knows she is bound for the pound, but fortune looks upon her in the form of a misunderstood, lonely witch. The witch sees something in the kitten that touches her heart and makes her want to keep the kitty. Will the witch manage to adopt the kitty, and build a loving and warm home together, proving to everyone that the kitty is not a bringer of bad luck?
Bad Luck Kitty is a heartwarming tale about love, understanding, and acceptance. Kitty and the witch’s struggles are relatable and emphasize the importance of seeing beyond appearance and misconceptions. The story encourages children to embrace their uniqueness, celebrate others' differences, and not judge one another. If everyone were the same, the world would not be a vibrant or interesting place. It was sad that the witch had to disguise herself, highlighting the challenge misunderstood people often face in trying to fit in. Lynne Gobioff does a great job of presenting the book's lessons in a way that young readers can understand and resonate with. The illustrations perfectly complement the story and bring it to life. The narrative has some humorous moments that are well depicted in the art. Overall, this is an amazing story that celebrates individuality and the importance of compassion and understanding.
