Awesome Team vs. CoronaVera is a children’s concept picture book written by Anna Svetchnikov and illustrated by Paula Wagner. Tony, Adrian, and their baby brother, Apollo, had big plans for Sunday morning. They were filled with energy, and Tony and Adrian’s bikes were waiting outside for them to begin some grand adventures. But when they ran to the front door, they discovered the door was locked. There was no way to get outside. Tony wondered what was going on. Adrian, the brains of the family, was already busily checking the news and announced that CoronaVera was on the warpath. He read about how this virus was a new phenomenon the scientists and doctors didn’t understand yet. Until they did, and a cure was discovered, kids all over would find their front doors magically locked and the outdoors tantalizingly out of reach. The three brothers had their own ideas for defeating the evil CoronaVera, however, and got right to work putting them in practice. The author includes her Coping Skills Wheel, filled with ways for kids to have fun indoors and destress, and a list of 10 things to do when you need to Take a Break and Relax.
Anna Svetchnikov’s Awesome Team vs. CoronaVera is a practical and fun book that teaches kids about the Coronavirus and gives them things to do to help them adjust to the drastic life changes the virus has imposed upon them. Her personification of the virus gives the story a superheroes vs. supervillain feel which works quite nicely. I loved her Coping Skills Wheel and would recommend it to anyone who’s feeling oppressed by the restrictions we’re all living through. I also worked through her Take a Break and Relax exercises and found them fun and, yes, relaxing. Paula Wagner’s illustrations enhance the superheroes comic book feel of the story. Each brightly colored panel showcases the Awesome Team as they battle the intensely awful-looking CoronaVera. Kids are feeling the impact of the pandemic so severely and they often don’t know enough about what’s happening and what resources they have to cope with the restrictions and lack of social interaction. This book goes a long way towards addressing the situation. Awesome Team vs. CoronaVera is most highly recommended.
