Awakening Through Anxiety: A Journey to Finding One's True Self by Amy Blakeslee is a non-fiction self-help memoir that harnesses the prior pain of its author and guides the reader to a path of their own making. Blakeslee begins with a profoundly honest analysis of her own past, unpeeling layers of childhood trauma that shaped into moments of intense anxiety as an adult, which ultimately transitioned into a constant thread of anxiety that consumed with abandon. Through this and over the course of an ambitious thirty-eight chapters, hope is offered in the form of actionable choices intended to assist others in similar situations to come out from under a cloud of dread and bask in the light of their own beautiful soul.
I wasn't expecting to become so emotionally invested in Awakening Through Anxiety, but Amy Blakeslee took me there. It took some time, though, and a massive amount of honesty from myself. I connected with the chapter Energy is Everything because it just felt so natural. The writing is extremely conversational, and Blakeslee's approach feels organic. The True-Self we are encouraged to engage with is hard to come by unless you are ready. It was when Blakeslee shared a story of a father blacking out on the lawn and a mother who tossed her children into a perpetual game of "which one of you is my favorite" that I knew we were on the same page. And I mean this literally. By the time I reached page 44, I was all-in. The exercises are simple and wonderfully freeing, with the True-Self Release Technique being the most poignant to me, and specifically the Release Technique for relationships. I'm nowhere near overcoming the fear of public speaking, but I am grateful to have the guidance to get there. Very highly recommended.
