Awaken is a work of fiction in the paranormal, fantasy, action and adventure sub-genres, and was penned by author L.C. Son. The second novel in the Beautiful Nightmare series, the work is recommended for adult readers due to some moderate scenes of a sexual nature, violence appropriate to the plot, and some mild language usage. Our central protagonist Damina Nicaud now understands that she is much more than meets the eye, and is venturing back out into the world to discover more about the allies and enemies that her lineage brings with it. So begins a vibrant and lavish tale in the dark corners of New Orleans, where vampires, wolves, and the like come out to play.
Author L.C. Son has crafted a stunning second-in-series novel which is positively dripping with atmosphere. Fans of light horror mixed with dark fantasy will have their fill of the exciting world that surrounds Damina as she continues her journey of discovery, both for her own skills and the affairs of her heart. One of the best features of the work is how much story it packs into the novel, never letting up on surprises, emotive scenes, action, and sudden twists to the plot. I really enjoyed all of the characters, and the dialogue shaped their personalities well, also making the romance elements sizzle all the more. Overall, I would highly recommend Awaken to readers of Hearts Eclipsed, but also for anyone looking to discover a new author and series with accomplished worldbuilding and intense atmosphere.
