The setting is the early 1700’s, Nassau. “The English Crown has neglected to send a governor to the Providence. Pirates claimed the area as their own. The government has offered the pirates a pardon, but many do not accept it.

Henry Avery approaches captain of the Osprey, Edward Talbot, for a favor. His daughter Arleigh is precious to him. He wants her safely off the island. He entrusts her welfare to Edward. Arleigh is not the innocent that her father believes her to be. Dressed as a man, she sails away on a pirate ship. Therefore, the quest begins.

Avery’s Treasure is an exciting read complete with treasure maps, shipwrecks, and island adventures. Avery’s Treasure by Kate Dolan is a splendid visit to the past. Ms. Dolan has thoroughly researched her topic. She successfully combines humor, history, romance, and fiction to tell the story of “pirates that sailed the Caribbean.” Arleigh is not your typical female lead character. Neither are the pirates what you may imagine. I enjoyed the use of actual pirates from the past. Dolan is an extremely gifted writer. I will be watching for more of her art.

I'm not usually a reader of romances, but I'm glad I made an exception in this case. "Avery's Treasure" is just that--a delightful story with wonderful twists in the plot that keep you guessing all the way through. I most enjoyed the characters, and their interactions with each other. They were anything but predictable. There is plenty of good humor which exists along side of the disasters the characters continually get into. Because the author does such a good job on setting the visual scene, I feel this would make an excellent movie.

I had no idea what was going to happen next with this one. But it didn't really matter because I had so much fun with the characters snapping at each other all the time - very funny. This is a great story when you're in the mood for action, adventure and nothing serious.
