Autonoma - Gate 13 by Emily Reading is a “young adult cyberpunk adventure” that hinges on a theme-park virtual reality environment. The concept is pretty straightforward: the amusement park Autonoma Resort creates the best possible experience for your vacation. Bespoke virtual reality, where poop is snow and snow is poop, depending on which the guest prefers. Alex and his young brother Michael are the guests, with the point of view being Alex in the first person. The pair are led by a robotic host named Henri and, like every kid at every amusement park ever, Michael is on the run. Constantly. Soon it is the park itself that is hurtling forward, the initial luster of the experience wearing off as each new ride becomes more confusing and more dangerous until both brothers are running for their lives.
My goodness, Autonoma – Gate 13 is heaps of fun to read. Emily Reading has crafted a Westworld meets Hunger Games narrative that is well suited for fans of science fiction that blends with a degree of realism and those who enjoy just some good old-fashioned storytelling. The writing style is simple, making the book extremely easy to follow, and both Alex and Michael are well-developed characters. Michael is a little boy of the why? why? why? mold, and bless Alex's racing heart for graciously referring to his annoying little brother as curious. The instructive clues that pop up on screens for Alex to get to Gate 13 elevate the story to suspense and solidify the idea that something more sinister than a simple malfunction is at play. The ending is twistier than expected and, overall, this is a novel worth a read.
