Auld Lang Secrets is A Saffron Ellis Mystery by April Patterson Clemens. Life is never boring when Saffron Ellis is around, and Wallace Hadley is happy she returned to Ville de Bois. While attending the Stapletons’ New Year's Eve party, Amara, a teen, is murdered. Saffron and Wallace decide to find the murderer so they form their own investigative company, Green Scarab Investigations. One of the main suspects is Heath Langdon, a ruffian whom Amara knew. He was seen fleeing when the body was discovered. Samuel, Amara’s over-protective stepfather, is also a suspect. Although shocked by the murder, most of the residents of Ville de Bois are gossipers so getting information from them was easy as Saffron and Wallace found out. When another murder is committed, the sleuths know that they have to solve the case quickly before more are committed. The deeper they investigate, unraveling more clues, the more unhinged the killer becomes.
April Patterson Clemens has written a very cozy sleuth mystery that will make you smile at times as Saffron and Wallace have a dry sense of humor. Both have their unique ways of extracting information from people. They make a good investigative team with amusing amateur skills. Saffron is outgoing, takes risks, and likes disguises. Wallace, the narrator of the story, is quiet and dependable but shows his strength when necessary. Auld Lang Secrets is an intriguing, moderately paced suspense novel with personable characters of different backgrounds. It has the charm that one expects to find in a small laid-back town. This is the first book in the Saffron Ellis Mystery series and I think the series will be well-received by readers who enjoy light-hearted mysteries.
