Attack of the Rom-Com: A Magically Funny Horror(ish) Novel by Martti Nelson is a hilariously entertaining read! The protagonist, Sophie, is a poor lost soul. She desperately needs to see the bigger picture in life. She is lost because of her past experiences while growing up. Her parents exemplify a case of people who should never be parents. Her unhappy childhood filters through to her in later years, leading to a tumultuous life. One thing that stays consistent in her life is her best and only friend, Jodie. They visit a fortune-teller who makes a prediction that will change Sophie's life forever. However, first, she has to endure living through a rom-com! The rom-com is a wild ride that holds nothing back and finally reveals the path to true happiness.
This book is such a fun and intense read. It is full of witty, down-to-earth comments and dialogue. I laughed so hard and silently cried at different scenes. Attack of the Rom-Com by Martti Nelson is a must-read for all romantics. If you love insane drama and theatrical, tempestuous dialogue and scenes, this book is for you. My favorite part was when Jodie discovered the jacket that Sophie had lost many years ago. It was such a heartbreaking tragedy for a young girl who lost one of her greatest and only treasures. It was easy to sympathize with Sophie, who came from a poor background. The revelation of the evil and selfish types of people out there made me sad and angry at the same time.
