"Asymmetric Warfare for Entrepreneurs" by Luan Hanratty is frankly an ingenious book. Its approach of applying a tactic of the famous Lawrence of Arabia during the Arab Revolt war, and which he wrote about in "Seven Pillars of Wisdom", to entrepreneurship in the ‘warfare’ of the business world works extremely successfully and is very inspiring. As the author says, the analogy between business and war is a tight one. The premise behind the book is that the small guy in the arena, whether a warrior or business person, can exploit this apparent disadvantage and weakness to his advantage. The book addresses getting established, fighting and orientating a cause, developing leadership qualities, strategies for competing, interpersonal skills, coping with adversity, change, handling people, plans and aspirations, and personal growth.
All these issues are divided into neat, salient topics. Each one is introduced by a discussion of particular action that Lawrence took and how it can be adapted by the entrepreneur in a way that will benefit his or her business. For example, copy Lawrence’s habit of producing a weekly bulletin (which was a secret report about Arab politics for the British) by issuing a weekly newsletter to employees and customers. Co-operating with powerful allies, not openly attacking the competitor, thinking big, holding firm - all these worked for Lawrence and can for the businessperson too. The author presents a lot of solid, astute business advice in this way. It is hard to think of any aspect of entrepreneurism that isn’t addressed in this very approachable book. The author has a conversational, clear style that is easy to read and digest. It is inspiring and full of valid, useful pointers and tips. One bit of advice is to say what we want to say in ten words or less. So, this book is full of original, informative, inspiring advice.
